We are building a new home and were surprised at the price of putting in masonry fireplaces. Our builder says zero clearance (metal) fireplaces are the way to go but our architect is concerned with quality and safety. We plan on having one see through (gas), one simple gas and another wood-burning. One of our concerns is that the zero-clearance won’t provide us with the large opening we want in our living area (the see-through). Opinions anyone?
