I have a few chisel questions. I hope they don’t sound too dumb. I’m sure they will bore most of you. I don’t know too much about mason’s chisels.
A few days ago I was at a Home Depot looking at some “Mayhew” mason’s chisels and I was very disappointed with these chisels. The end near the cutting edge was not at all balanced or uniform on both sides. The one side was lopsided compared to the other side. One redeeming thing I noticed was that the edges were sharp (But I’m not sure if sharpness is very important for mason’s chisels?)
So I purchased two “Dasco Pro” mason’s chisels from a local distributor – a 1″ and a 2 3/4.” I needed to chip away some mortar. The 2 3/4″ failed to perform very well. The edge was dull compared to other Dasco 1″ chisel. Perhaps it needs to be sharpened? Do you even sharpen mason’s chisels? Anyway, I had better luck with an old rusted and bent floor chisel. I will probably return the chisel that didn’t work well for another brand. Anyone ever hear of a brand called “Duracut?” I t may be an English import. Any other brands I should consider?
I also need to get my first cold chisel. I need to cut some nails, but I will probably need to use it for something else sooner or later. I also work on my vehicles too. What would be a good versatile size for a cold chisel – 1/2″ 5/8″ 3/4″ 7/8″
Thanks, Rob
