Hi all,
Looking for professional advice for a friend.. She’s having a wood floor installed “floated” over the older wood floor. Her house, in Alexandria VA, is old enough that the floor doesn’t have a sub-floor. (I’m not sure I’d do that… but that’s not the question)
The question is how to deal with the stairs. They are light oak. The upstairs is maple. the new floor downstairs will be wenge. She wants the stairs to look good and thinks it would be too many different colors. Evidently her contractor is suggesting floating a new floor over the current risers and treads. That doesn’t sound good or right to me. Sounds like it would throw the stair proportions off too. It also sounds like the most expensive?
What would you suggest?
Thanks..

I've got a BIL out in Denver that installs lam floors and he constantly does the floating floor over the stairs, got to be the ugliest thing I ever saw!
Having some contrast isn't a bad thing, all wood in a house doesn't have to match. I cant see her particular thing so don't know what the solution would be, just know that I would use real Wenge over the stairs before the "floating floor" stuff.

Couldn't she have the oak on the stairs refinished to match one of the floors, at least in color? Or ebonize them--though that may make it hard to see the steps and could be dangerous.
