Hi guys.
Building a small bathroom on the first floor for an elderly couple. Am to install a 3 piece shower unit; 48″ X 36 inch deep.
Originally framed new walls for a Lasco brand shower unit. Delays, delays, delays, forced me to purchase a different unit (Sterling Vikrel). The 2 shower units are the same size, but the drain hole for the Sterling is 18 inches from the back wall, instead of 16 like the Lasco. This discrepancy puts the drain location smack square in the middle of a floor joist. Can’t move the shower, very little room to work with. Have to cut through the joist and then block it off with headers. No big deal, but a question arose: How do we keep this area from developing a floor squeak later on? The joists are 2X10s, 16″ OC. House is over 60 years old. Joist are plenty dry. Now I go and head them off using new wood, later the wood shrinks a little, squeaks pop up?
Anything I can do to avoid this, or am I over reacting? KD lumber around here is like all the other lumber at my local yard; it sits outside un-protected gathering moisture; so please don’t tell me the answer is to use KD lumber.
What do most of you do to avoid squeaks in remodeling only situations?
Davo.
