I have a stairway that is 36″+ wide, and I am looking to install a handrail with minimum projection from the sidewall to provide maximum stairway width. Code calls for 36″ clear in the stairway, but if I can come within a couple of inches of that, and still provide a railing with adequate grip, and clearance from the wall for fingers I should be alright.
Does anyone know some tricks of the trade, or a vendor who would have brackets and or railing that would help solve this dilema. Thanks
Jeff

Codes are pretty specific when it comes to handrails. Handrails must be no less than 1-1/4 inches in outside diameter AND the handrail MUST PROJECT out from the wall a minimum distance of 1-1/2 inches. Typically, handrails project no more than 3-1/2 inches max. from the side wall.
It would be best to consult with your code enforcement official as to how best incorporate a handrail into this stairway; since after all, it will be up to said official to approve or disaprove your work. I'd go with his/her suggestion; that way you know the handrail will "fly."
