We are remodeling our kitchen and want to replace two kitchen windows (50+ years old) in keeping with the overall new look. I’d like to use replacement sashs, since they are small and I don’t want to lose any glass area. Our window openings are 3/8 of an inch wider than the nearest custom size (but the same height exactly). Would this create too much play in the window? Should I order a custom size?
Also, any input as to brands would be great.

I think 3/8" is way too much. Is replacing the entire window out of the question? The cost may be about the same as having custom sashes built. This would give you the overall best job with the most weather proof (energy efficient) install. Of course, this rout would be more labor intensive. You may want to keep an eye on the < Obsolete Link > Replacement windows. Am I wrong? thread that was started today.
*Becky, you don't say where you are located, but if you are in the New England,Pa.,N.Y.,or N.J.area I would highly recommend Harvey Industries, although they only sell to contractors, so you will need to have your contractor make the purchase. They are an excellent company with an excellent product which they stand behind. Since replacing the sashes will only alter their appearance, the rest of the window and trim will still be the same, I suggest you install a replacement window with new interior trim, or do a completely new window into the existing R.O. if you can find a stock window that will fit. Otherwise I think a replacement window is the way to go, since it will be custom made to fit your frame opening(as all replacements are),then just change the interior trim to go along with the new style of the kitchen. Hope this helps, Geoff
*Marvin has a replacement system called the tilt pac wich can be custom sized & I have used several times. Norco also has a similar system but have not yet tried it.

I've used Marvin Tiltpacs several times and have been satisfied. These were aluminum clad on the outside and wood on the inside. Properly measured, they are a breeze to install.
