Neat idea... I'm in.
PaulB
Great idea!
This has been discussed before, but no one had a way to get it done.
It will be interesting to watch how the map fills out.
Whoops, I'm in the wrong spot. Clicked something I shouldn't have.
Any idea how to change?
Jim
Never underestimate the value of a sharp pencil or good light.
I'll remove you and then you can add yourself back in the right spot.Is there a way to make this a Sticky so it's always readily available in the Forum?
Thanks, I entered myself as Jim Carter, then a second time as JTC1.
JTC1 is in the right spot.
I notice I am the only one on the list with "remove me" next to my name.
I'll check back later.
Jim
Sorry I removed JTC1 before I saw your post. I'll remove Jim Carter now. Just put yourself back in where you should be. Sorry again...
i'm now on the map although you may have to zoom out rather a lot to see me
:)
Dang, this has become a lot more popular than I expected...We now have US, Canada and UK. Look at it now. Please not that there are quick zoom links in the upper right corner. With one click you can zoom back to country level. But I thought out of respect we should see the bigger picture.
Awesome!! I love maps.
Interesting -- The satellite images look like the old Microsoft Terraserver, which is nowhere near as good or recent as the Google Earth data. It could also use the ability to move your marker, and edit or delete.
-- J.S.
That's cool. I'm in.
Let's see, we need Doug, BamBam, Intrepidcat, Ed, TXlandlord, Jame DuHammel, and a few more I can't quite remember just now, just to fill in Texas <g>
AR looks lonely without Mooney & Miz, too <g>
Good/interesting idea, I'm in...Buic
Can you edit the markers to make them smaller by any chance? At the rate you're going the whole map will be invisible ;)
Can also add BT Landmarks... Fest sites, good suppliers, bordellos ;)
Man, give an inch...It's very limited what the map will let us do. I may go back to the default view of the US only as it opens.
LOLLLLL... Just trying to be helpful ;)
We should mark the location of the Woodshed though, dontcha think? I nominate Lebanon Kansas, zip code 66952, which Googles as the geographic center of the US.
Added.
Very neat

Don't know whats happening - went in, name not on list, flag in right spot, added name, name re-appeared on list, still says "remove" next to name.
S-o-r-r-y, I probably broke it!
Thanks for all your efforts on this - cool idea.

Hey! I got in just before the property values skyrocketed. Literally, if we hadn't bought our lot when we did, in a week we'd have been priced out of town. As it was, we didn't have the scratch left over to build a garage.
There are two sets of people in town, those with money, and our friends....
And fwiw, I don't work for Taunton anymore.Andy

Not a problem, Boss. I left because I wanted to. While I retain the highest regard for Taunton, working there had run its course. There were several other ventures calling me, so here I am. Mostly, I'm working at home writing a book for Taunton on stairbuilding. There are several magazine articles in the offing, I'm doing some carpentry, and in my spare time, I do home energy assessments.Andy

Any body have a recent Fest Photo to send to NCBuilder as the "Group" picture?
Just let me know...
I'm in.
the satellite shows me a few blocks from where I really live, but it's still close
I think it's just based on a random location based on your zipcode. Maybe they'll have pinpoint accuracy one day. But it's still pretty cool.
A friend showed me a satellite website that can zoom in on your house- I tried it and saw my van sitting in my backyard, when I was in upper New york state. That was pretty cool.
For this a couple of blocks away doesn't really make any difference- but it sure is getting crowded on the East coast w/ BTers.
> A friend showed me a satellite website that can zoom in on your house-
Sounds like the free Google Earth service. You can download it from Google. Resolution is amazing, much better than the old Microsoft Terraserver. The dataset is no more than a couple years old. I looked at my place, it has it with the Henry's aluminum coating on the flat roof that I did late in '03. And I can recognize my neighbor's van parked on the street.
It does annotations, overlays, Lat/Long, lotsa good stuff. I've found the meteor crater in Arizona, and Auschwitz. Somebody has posted an overlay of a WWII bomber photo there.
-- J.S.
To everybody sent me notes about any problems or with suggestions as to how to make the map better - I DID NOT DEVELOP IT, NOR DO I HAVE ANY CLUE HOW TO CHANGE THE PROGRAMING. I totally agree with all the suggestions, but have no way of making those changes. There has to be an Administrator who hosts the map and that's all I am. So, as much as I'd love to make the changes suggested, I cannot. Here's what I can do:Change the default zoom view (cuurently Country).
Change the group picture (seriously thinking of DieselPig's).
Delete members (hmmm, maybe that would fix things in a a hurry lol)
Create/edit Group Description (currently none)
Add tags for others to find our map, which has to made public to work (which I've opted not do)
Add it to the Frappr Public Directory (not done)
Add a starting zipcode location (which I have not done)
Remove member comments
Remove member pictures (does Dieselpigs offend anyone, seriously?)
Plus a couple of other things dealing with website linksThere, now you know...
that's the one- my wife told me when I asked her, and I just downloaded it tonight.
I don't know how recent the photos are, but the satellite pic doesn't snow, and the ground here's been white for over a week
> don't know how recent the photos are, but the satellite pic doesn't snow, ....
They're mostly within the last couple years, and I think their policy is to use summer data from those areas where it snows. I've looked at Russia, Poland, and Germany, found no snow.
It makes sense. If snow makes the roof white and the street white and the back yard white, a picture from way up in space is going to be a lot less interesting than one without snow.
Real time high resolution coverage of the whole planet isn't available now, not even to the intelligence agencies of the superpowers. It takes years to gather a fairly complete dataset for the whole planet. A lot of the time, you just get clouds.
If something really important is going on, a military buildup, a natural disaster, they can aim the satellites at it on their next pass. Typically, these are low orbits, like 90 minutes or so. If it's super important, they may even adjust the orbit to get closer to overhead. But that uses some of the bird's onboard fuel supply. Often, they'll wait longer for a pass that comes closer.
To get images that look like they're from straight up, the data gets massaged by computers. You can see the effect of this in some cases on tall buildings with long shadows. In this respect, as in all others, the Google Earth data is substantially better than the old Terraserver stuff that Frapper seems to be using.

That it does. On the same dial-up POTS connection, Mozilla is about 25% faster, and has fewer graphics "hangs" so far. So, for dial-up, with my computer, on my phone line, Mozilla is more like the boradband connection at work (which lets a person easily click on things like sort by name, or by place, or zoom to state or region . . . )
Funny that it's not recognizing Candian postal code, that (or US Zip codes) are what really 'drive' the map location, not the city name. (City name appears to be a convenience text line attached to the pushpins; you may have had an ascii character mismatch if you used french characters--just a WAG on my part).Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)

For those who are having difficult getting the map to display at all, or who are getting browser errors:The map is based on Google's mapping program, and is very heavy on modern Miscosoft browser technology, including Active X, Javascript, and a bunch of other stuff. I think you need at least IE 6.0 to see it correctly. Furthermore, if you have XP and whatever IE version comes packaged with it, the default security settings for the Internet Zone (or maybe just my own personal settings for this zone, which are pretty tight) may block some activity that the map needs to display. In the case of Google Maps, I solved my viewing issue by adding Google's map page to my Trusted zone in IE -- something I hate doing, but I didn't have the patience to suss out exactly which restriction(s) was(were) causing the problem.Hope this helps!Rebeccah
"The map is based on Google's mapping program, and is very heavy on modern Miscosoft browser technology, including Active X, Javascript, and a bunch of other stuff. I think you need at least IE 6.0 to see it correctly."Not exactly.Scroll down to the bottom of the page and see;"The Frappr Team Loves Firefox!
See why Firefox is our favorite Browser!
If you love Firefox like us, join the Firefox User's Map!"And there ain't any ACtiveX on this computer.
Firefox rocks!!!!
Well, there may well be code that checks what browser you have, but I *do* have IE, and if I disallow ActiveX, the US map doesn't appear at all. If I allow it (I have it set to prompt), the map appears.*If* you are viewing Google's site using IE, and *If* your IE version is 5.0, you will (or at least you used to, I haven't tried in a while) get a message saying you need a newer browser version. And this map looks very much like Google's, from the US map down to those red raindrop-shaped pushpins. So I will qualify my suggestion for those having trouble viewing the map: *If* you are using IE (and there are some of us out there), try making sure you have a current version, loosening up your security settings, and possibly adding the site to your Trusted Zone.Rebeccah

I live in White Cross, a little west of Carrboro on 54. I worked on Arcadia, right behind Wexford...what took you to Shallotte? Hey, pocket doors can't come off the track if they're nailed open
I used to live just before White Cross in The Trails. Is the little mexican restaurant still open next to the movie rental place? The company I was managing for decided to close there and concentrate on the coast, then (even though I swore i never would again) I went back out on my own last year.
That's too funny, I live across from the 'Lil Bar ( now under new managment as Crossroads 54 still pretty danged 'lil lol) , on Carl Durham, and go up to the Fiesta Grill all the time. I had blanked the Lil Bar out of my memory! Thanks for the reminder lol.Rot is right. We were there for the ice storm a couple of years back. that was a crazy time. We built the first new house on the right on Overland Passage (yellow house) and set a new sale price record when we sold, for something like $75,000 more than anything had ever sold for before. I miss the privacy, but not the dark, pine, rot, water, tree hugging, hippy side of things. And, I LOVED the Fiesta Grill. What, you mean a video store can't be profitable renting 3 videos a week?

there's both- some good work, and some bad. I guess it's like everywhere else.
I'm into remodeling and repair, so I see all kinds of work. There's been times where I'm amazed that anything is still standing, and times where I've been really impressed with how well everything fit.
I like working on old homes ( 100 yrs. plus). Yeah, they're a challenge. But I've learned a lot working on them.
To those of you who were concerned about pinpointing your location on the map (so the axe murderer will have an easier time finding you). If you are a Frappr member, you're able to pinpoint your location via the member set-up page. I see Golden Wrecked Angle posted his location so he must be monitoring the forum, even if he is not posting.Does that mean that we should watch what we say about him?
I am in too, I think. :)
Whaaaa
I get an "error on page"
can't see the map.

So, have you been tracking the number so far? (Or does Frappr sent you metrics, maybe?)
I'm wanting to remember that there were about 31 members this time yesterday, and the last Refresh offers up 156--that's pretty phenominal growth (but, then again, we BTers are legion <g>).
Yes, I have been tracking it...157 now. Crazy world!
Make that 160- I just joined. Very cool site, if I do say so.
Bob
I'm in. Very cool idea!
mk
Did it.
How oftern do they refresh or retake the satellite images?
I was thinking I would mow "Hello BT Members" in the pasture on my property.
Members here are telling me that the sat pics are 8 to 10 years old. So you may want to dig into your lawn instead of mowing it in. Or, you could just change out your shingles to spell out on your roof!
> How oftern do they refresh or retake the satellite images?
These look like the old Microsoft Terraserver images from 8-10 years ago. Check out Google Earth for newer and higher resolution images, like within the last couple years.

I'm there!
Headstong, I'll take on anyone!
I like the addition of the pictures, went to the Post Office today and I think they have many of the same ones on the wall there : )
No joke, maybe should change mine, just added it, pix was in an airport just playing with a newer camera last year, you are right, does look like a P.O. FBI wanted pix.

Nothing like joining the party late.
Crazy how many people are in my neck of the woods
Umm...do I have to grow a beard to stay in Breaktime?
Judgeing from the map with the entrants there , you are centrally located for a fest. <G>
Tim
Beckman already HAD a fest.Well, sort of. He talked Doud into hosting it, but he helped. A little.(-:I tried to host one, but just couldn't generate much interest. You're kinda centrally located. How about YOU try to host a fest one of these years ???

All right, there seems to be a little hiccup with the member map. I can't get all the markers to show up. I've e-mailed them but no response. But if you look at the Frappr Blog you'll see that they're constantly updating and working out the bugs. So, I'd say patience is in order, especially since it's free.Another very cool thing. If you do a Frappr account, free, you get a Frappr page to personalize. So, if you click on a member's marker and it brings up their Frappr page, they can customize it to exactly where they live (if you want to visit, or abduct them) and their favorite places (restaurants, clubs, supply stores, Bill W meetings, etc.). So, if you're visiting another state or town where a member lives, you can have ready access to favorite local spots without having to go to Bojangles and the corner gas station for coffee all the time.Too cool...
How come the pins disapear? One time I'll click on KY. and everyones there. And the next time some are missing.

Click on 50 more locations. Only shows 50 at first. There is over 268 locations now. I wondered where I was since my little red thingie was missing. Love your pic. What are you wearing now?
Gotcha.
This morning I'm feeling "special" I'm dressed in a feather boa and leotards. It's my favorite outfit for watching Steve McQueen movies.

I've e-mailed with the Frappr team about this. There was a bug, but they fixed it. What should happen now is everytime you click the Add 50 More Markers, it should do just that until it adds all of them. They reduced the load rate for older computers, slow connections and you Dinosaurs still using IE. If you are stil having problems, try clearing your cache and cookies and then reload the page.
Very cool stuff. I've wanted this very capability for something for years, and just didn't want to have to develop it myself. Thank heavens I didn't spend the time trying.
YA think the pins are weird? I get no map any more. One day its there then two weeks its not. Nothin' changed on my end. Must be my karma..someones afraid I'm gonna hop in my van with a dog named fleabait. The secret of Zen in two words is, "Not always so"!

Well, I finally got a new computer and Frappr actually, sorta, kinda works if I use IE.So I'm now on the map.Clearly not a site for slow dial up speeds....Rich BeckmanAnother day, another tool.

Yeah, it's much friendlier using Mozilla over all, but particularly on dial-up.
I run both on about every machine, so it's only a small hassle to remember to start the right browser. I have noted that IE runs better if you go to frappr with mozilla (and vice versa).Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
