I have an existing shingle roof.We are doing sdome changes to our house and would like to put on a metal roof. We are making a more key west style look. What what needs to be done to the roof? Can the metal be put over the existing roof after the shingles are removed? Or does the roof have to ripped off and removed all together. Also what is the cost invloved compared to shingle roofing materials. How difficult is it to install yourself?
thanks.

Hi Elizabeth.
I think it's a great idea, in general. Could you provide
more information about your current roof structure? Details
about Pitch, What types of sheathing materials you have,
where are you located, how complicated is the roof regarding
protrusions like chimneys, vents, skylights, dormers, etc,
how many valleys?
I completely understand the desire for Key West Style. To
me, it's religion! Will help if you can address my request
for detail.

*I really like the new metal roofing products that I have been using recently. In my area material prices for metal are comparable to a 25 yr. fiberglass shingle. I usually figure on removing any old roof coverings on any of my jobs. This allows you to check out the condition of roof sheathing and replace anything that might be bad. (usually at roof edges.) It also eliminates chances that you may be overloading the roof framing. Without any more info. this is about all that I can tell you. Steve
*Elizabeth?
*Elizabeth-check the websites http://www.steelroofing.com and http://www.metalroof.org-you can get a little general info that may be a stsrt. Good luck.
*DawgIt's your moniker, man. ..ya scared her away, she see's you all curled lip and a slobberin, hackles up, mangy fur...man you're a scarry sight!!!-pm
*That computer has an electric eye, PM, I do look rough this morning. 2 day headache from breathing 3 century dust, dirt and of course good old lead paint, kneeling on a reclaimed floor, I'm beat to a pulp. All that's left are a couple stumps, bloodied and hairless. Hackles would be up, but too danged tired. Didn't create a memory loss of that barn roof, still fresh in my mind.Slobberingly,MD

MD and Elizabeth: Today I found this site and registered. I sent a HELP question about metal roofing before I found your discussion. I see a mention of Key West Style - and I don't know what that is. I also wonder if metal roofs can be walked on (lightly) to sweep or clean? Are metal roofs architecturally desirable? My husband has doubts. Thanks - Nicki Shay in Western Washington, South of Seattle. ([email protected])

I've never met a metal roof that I wanted to clean . . . structural strength depends on the guage (thickness) of the metal and whether or not it was installed over strapping/purlins (my peference hands down) or over solid sheathing (some manufacturers requirement apparently), not to mention the pitch, and it shouldn't be installed on anything less than 6/12 in my experience, so get yourself some suction cups, and a harness to go along with the Bee Mop (whadda great image- S&M harness and headgear, thigh high boots with suction cups and a bee mop!!)
Architectural desirability is all in the eyes of the beholder. Personally I think metal roofing looks perfect on very modern designs, Gothic Revival 12/12 gables and log or board & batten houses with a decent pitch .. but looks really bad on Victorians, low pitch bungalows, or ranch style. My taste only!!
Don't know about Key West, I'll let Dawg answer that one!

*Well, the Key West style is an amalgam of Bahamian, Cuban and English ship captain influences mainly from the 1820's to the 1920's. Key West was the richest city in the nation at times during this period, and a lot of the phenomenal architecture reflects that. But the style goes farther. With a tropical climate, the lush landscape, laid-back Jimmy Buffett lyrics make island living seem like reality, even after you've only been there for a day or two. There's conch chowder, shrimp and fish cooked 10 paces from the boat it came in on a few minutes ago, Cuban cigars, love boats, sea hags, old salts, Hemingway lookalikes, diaper-clad skate footed gay boys, women who used to be men and look a hell of a lot like WIMMEN, chickens in the brick streets, history abounds there, and is not completely entrenched in tourism (though there is a connection) but is embraced by the island, and you can make friends with artists, writers, poets, and other interesting people.I could spout on and on ad infinitum on request. One of these days I'll figure out how to do pictures!Till then,MD+++++++++++++++++++++++++++
