We’d like to use metal roofing on our new house but are concerned about the noise level in the rain on the screened porch. Is there a time-tested way to solve that problem? We had hoped to use open rafters in that area to give the feeling of a higher ceiling.

Metal over plywood is a lot quieter - use felt paper. Metal over purlins is a pleasant sound, however, and you'll only hear it when you are outside your new house.
Same here, copper over plywood, can hardly hear it. A plastic dome skylight is a lot louder in the rain.

I dunno, I kinda like the sound...
its natural, calming and I can hear when its raining, so I know to go sit on the porch.
Treat every person you meet like you will know them the rest of your life - you just might!
can you do something like this and use solid 2x6 T&G to absorb the sound, maybe with homasote or at least a couple pllies of 30# paper?

I can barely hear mine, it will put you to sleep in a heartbeat. But my metal bldg shop will run you out. you know its raining before the ground does.
I remember as a kid being in an Airstream aluminum travel trailer during a hail storm. Now that was noisy. Of course, I could still hear back then...
Go for it , old age will take care of the sound.
I have a steel roof on my home and pn my shop.
The steel is installed on 2X4's on the wide and on 24"
centres. Heavy felt over the 2X4's then the steel is attached
with 1 1/2 " roofing screws that include self-sealing washers.
The sound when it rains is very muted and relaxing.
I live on Denman Island, B.C. -- that's rainforest country,
and we get really heavy rain from November to March.
As the man sais, "Go for it! Age will take care of the sound."
