I need to install metal roofing (pre-painted) on an existing shingle roof. The sheathing is good (seen from the attic) and there is only one layer of shingles. The roofing mfg don’t mention furring strips but I am being told my others to install on strips to get ventilation. Advice? 1. install over shingles, 2. furring strips?
thanks

2. furring strips?
Because expansion and contraction will wear the finish off the back of the pans when they rub against the agregate on the shingles.
Or you could tear off the shingles and install the metal on the sheathing over felt or a synthetic underlayment, which would be my preference.

But you all knew that. I detailed it extensively in my blog.
I'd agree with this. Tearing of the shingles is the best way to do this. Felt over the sheeting, and then nail directly. You also get the added benefit of sound deadening. If the roof is in direct contact with sheeting, it really cuts down on the amount of sound transmitted when it rains. It also gives a little more support in case of hail, or when someone walks on the roof.
