Metal weathstrip/adding a deadbolt

I need to add a deadbolt lock on a door for my inlaws (read as free work), old solid core wood door. No problem boring the holes in the door, but how do I work the the metal weatherstrip on the jamb. Do I remove the length of metal, mortise my latch plate and then fit the metal, or is there an easier way
