A batch of very green fir 2x8s delivered recently had extensive surface black patches which I presume are mildew. They will be used in a visible location after being sanded primed and painted. They have been stickered and dried quite a bit in the California summer sun. Now I am sanding them (PC 6″ random orbit hand sander) and have removed the dried mildew encrustations. I assumed the primer would kill any residual mildew spores but the product labels point out that the primer products are only effective against new mildew formation in the paint itself. I am a little paranoid that the wood still harbors spores that will bloom again in our damp winter conditions. I have experimented so far with chorine and H2O2 bleach as mildewcides to disinfect the boards prior to priming. There has been no noticable bleaching effect on the residual mildew stains. I did not find any other mildewcides available locally. Any suggestions from others who have had similarly infected wood?
