Hi all,
I’m a retired “want to be” setting up a woodworking shop in my attached, two car garage. I just had a subpanel including 240v added for my new SawStop and 12″ jointer/planer. Since I live in a humid climate, North Carolina, I figure I need to control the humidity/temperature and I’m getting quotes on a mini split, Mitsubishi (19,000 BTUs), that also provides heat in the winter months. So far the quotes are around 7K installed but one supplier is strongly suggesting to just do a window unit, 16,000 BTUs at only $700 that can also supply heat. My shop does have windows although I don’t think I’d like the look and sound. Still, the price difference is staggering. Any thoughts from folks that have experienced one or the other would be appreciated.

If someone who stands to make a lot of money tells you that there is a cheaper way that is just as good, I'd believe 'em.
Try the window unit. If it is not enough you can spend the extra money later.
A $700 window unit is likely to be just an air conditioner with an added electric resistance heater, not an actual reversible heat pump. Check the specs carefully. If you only need occasional heat, that might be a reasonable compromise.
FWIW, $7K for a small mini-split sounds a bit steep. Like 2-3 times what it should be.
You should consider a through the wall unit.
What did you end up doing? We're looking at a mini split for our garage just to keep temp moderate all year. They want about $7K. Another company said a heat pump was a bad idea and would require a huge unit outside, costing around $18K. Can't imagine what they're thinking!
