I plan to put a 12″ or 14″ diam. bar sink in a new kitchen island and don’t know what size is appropriate for a standard base cabinet under the sink. 15″, 18″, 21″, or 24″ wide? I’m in the design phase of building my home … just figuring out the best cabinet arrangement. The island dimensions are 7’0″ by 3’6″ (there’s a built-in 18″-wide eating bar). The island will have a 48″ cooktop, leaving a total of 3’0″ to put extra cabinets on either side. The sink will be next to the cooktop, on a corner of the island.
Thanks.

Chris,
It's really kind of simple.....
Pick out your sink and faucet set, and design your cabinet to fit that.

*Chris,You need about 2" on each side - a 14" sink would need an 18" cabinet. I suggest you get some cardboard and do a mockup. If you center your cooktop I think you will find very little room around your bar sink. In use, I think you are going to want some adjacent counter top to set stuff on. May be smart to offset the cooktop a bit. Also, check with your plumber to ensure a sink can be vented to code where the island is going. Plumbing in islands can be tricky!
*Why in the world do you want to put a 48" cook top in a 7' cabinet and a sink too? Two 18" counters on either side of the sink would be a comfortable minimum. Putting a sink in one of them will make both the counter and the sink virtually unusable. Consider a 36" cook top or even 30" and you may be able to make this work.
*Good advice. I'm switching to a 36" cooktop. Makes the island arrangement more manageable.
*If your floor plan allows, consider putting the sink facing the end of the counter, so 2 people aren't trying to work parallel at the counter.
