I was re-reading DonnaKay Smiths thread on crown moulding, and just thought I’d ask what kind of mitre boxes do you all use and why. This is a two parter: What kind of blade do you use in the said mitre boxes. I know what I like: DeWalt 12″ (price, weight and accuracy) with systematic blades.
What’s your favorite?

Dewalt 12", Forrest blade. Gonna add the Bosch slider one of these days.
*I bought a Makita 14" miter box about 18-20 years ago before the sliding compounds came out. I keep hopin' that thing will die so I can upgrade, but it just keeps howling along. I have a Freud 100 and somethin' tooth ATB blade on it that I've had for probably ten years. When it was new it was unbelievably sharp, put a glass like finish on end grain. I have had really good luck with those Freud teflon 80 tooth ATB on my radial arm saw too. Sometimes I'll cut 10,000 blocks a day, and they have to be really smooth or we would have to sand them. At 60.00 for a 10", these are hard to beat. - jbHey Adrian! - just saw your post when I sent mine, do you send your Forrest back to them to sharpen? I finally broke down and tried one in my table saw last year (kinda spendy, and not much different). I liked it ok, but they recomend to let them sharpen them. What do you do? - jb
*I've got a 12 inch one too. I was talking about my dewalt of course. I use the blade it came with. Don't do a trendous amount of finish trim work but it can be a great asset on decks.Pete Draganic
*Hey Jim. i just held off sharpening mine for a while; sending it cross border for sharpening wasn't something i wanted to do. i read some posts at Knots where guys were having there local guys do it, so i took mine into my guy. He doesn't have a lot of good things to say about them: factory sharpening required-crap. Extra special qualities-crap.owner personally inspects each blade-crap. It works just as well from what i can see after he sharpened it as when it was new. i think it is a good blade, no better, and there is a lot of hype attached to them. I like FS Tools blades, and I may try a Tenryu soon. personally ,I hate most freud blades, and resent having to pay for their advertising campaigns, but I have to admit some of their crosscut blades are pretty good, LU 87 is the one I know.

*Adrian - Now that you mantion it, I have to agree about the Frued being good for crosscutting but not ripping. I bought a Freud 40 tooth with rakers a few years ago for my table saw and didn't like it at all. (not exactly "on thread" but related, sorry Ed) - jb
*Ed,I use a DeWalt 12" Compound Miter, and Makita 12" dual compound slider. Mostly use them for trim, but have done decking, framing and siding with them too.I haven't found any blade that is any better than ANY of the Makita blades (I even get their skill saw blades resharpened). Tenryu may make these, but my quest for good steel is finally over.Cuttingly,BB
