Sections of my roof need to be reshingled. The majority of the house has 3 tab style. I would like to use the new architectual style primarily because I understand they are easier to install. The roof valleys are were the two styles would meet with the new style overlapping the old.
Can the two styles be mixed? Are there any drawbacks of mixing the two styles other than cosmetic?

You are going to use a closed valley with the new shingles over top of the old shingles.
Good luck.
My bias, I don't like closed valleys. Could be setting yourself up for a bad valley job.
my 2 cents

I also dislike lapped valleys like that, and if the existing 20 year shingles are to be lapped over with the heavier 40 year shingles, iut is a cinch that in ten years he will be ruining some 40 year shingles to replace the old ones. Now is the time to go to a metal valley cut open if he is only doing part of the roof. Persoanlly I would almost never do one side of a valley only.

As per instructions on the materials, the valley should have 36" I&W underneath.
Looking more and more like he should just tear it all off and do it right.
Easy for me to say, it's not my house or money. LOL
I've done my share of dumb things to save a dollar, I'd better shut up now.

somebody has been yanking your chain, pulling your leg, and getting you dizzy with party games
but other than that, the only problem is cosmetic
But you should consider having a sign painted to put ion the front yard to explain why to the thousands of people who will otherwise cause accidents driving by and wondering as they gawk.
