Hello.
I am going to redo my flat roof next week. I see that the granular modified bitumen menbrane is sold in both black and white. Is there a difference in performance between the two? Is the white more reflective?
After redoing it, should I then cover my roof with aluminum paint? I am in New York City, and the sun does get pretty strong in the summer.
Today, the rain is pounding outside, and the drips are dripping inside…
Thanks for your help.

Musashi,
I do not do alot of Mod bit roofs, but the last I did we used Certainteed and they had just come out with the cool coatings. Apparently the mineral has heat reflective qualities. This is not just a white granule.

I think this is the product

Thanks for the advice. I assume that aluminum roof paint on top of the white coating would probably be redundant?

stay away from the silver coatings... tests show they just don't do alot... now bright white does a ton... but start getting away from bright white and reflective performance drops very fast...
I assume you get snow.... which will not melt off near as fast with white... but if it's alot of snow it has "r-value"

Thanks for the input.
I read somewhere that the aluminum roof paint was an energy saver, so I thought I would put the question out there, and see if it is really worth the time and expense.
We do get snow in New York. Usually a few inches, sometimes 6 or more. The summer sun is really hot, however.
Given a choice between black and white roofing material, it seems that white would probably be a better choice.

The AL is an energy saver in Texas when compared to a smooth surface black roof, but in NY, comparing it to a white surface, it is a waste of your money

Do the manufacturers permit spraying the aluminum on top of there products?
I have only seen that stuff sprayed in old tin and metal roofs.

It depends on the product and the kind of AL coating. For instance, an EPDM is not tolerant of bituminous products. So you hjave to read the literature for the roofing product you use

Around here, it gets brushed/rolled on top of tarpaper roofs.
I hadn't thought to check with the manufacturer. Thanks.
