A customer of mine wants to change the look of her kitchen. Her kitchen is very large and the cabinets and doors are in good shape. The doors are single piece MDF with an oak veneer edge banded with 3/4″x 3/4″ oak.
I took two doors home.
Door 1 I modified by simply routing a classical ogee edge detail.
Door 2 I converted into a flat panel door by cutting out the center and replacing it with a 1/4″ thick beadboard panel held in with molding. Actually the molding is on the front only and the panel is set into the opening with adhesive.
The customer liked both styles of doors and will probably use a combination of both.
Door 1 was easy and would definitely be cheaper than a new door. (approx. $7 per door)
Door 2 was more complicated and at a cost of $55 per door is more than the cost of a new door.
I think that since the existing doors fit, I will still save them money since I don’t have to measure and fit new doors, and they won’t have to buy new.
I am a little worried about the 1/4′” tempered hardboard beadboard panels. They seem solid but I am concerned that they could warp. Should I avoid using tempered hardboard (beadboard?)
Has anybody taken on a project like this?
Any suggestions or responses are welcome
thanks
Adrian
