Hi all, got a question for anyone with knowledge of siding. I’m building a house in Wisconsin where the weather rarely cooperates. We get just about as many cloudy and rainy days as we get snow days. Thing I’m wondering is, I started siding my house back in April of this year and the siding still isn’t done, (doing flooring, tile, interior finish and everything else inbetween). The house is a 2 story, with 2×6 exterior walls that are already insulated, drywalled, and painted, (on the inside) and sheathed with 1/2″ osb and covered with house wrap on the outside. To the best of my knowledge there are no leaks where it’s not sided. I’m siding the home with cedar. Thing I’m wondering is, with all the new concerns about mold in the news lately; should I be worried about possible mold growth with the house not being completely sided? When it rains here, it pours and the sun eventually comes out to dry things up; but I don’t want to worry about mold or anything else that a lawyer can drum up in case I decide to sell the home. Or, should I put off the inside projects and focus on the exterior?….thanks!!!

Do you have tar paper up? then don't sweat it. Siding is just something to paint and look good while protecting the tar paper (which actually does the real work)
Hi, thanks for the note. I don't have tar paper up; just the Tyvek. Is that normal to put tar paper up anymore? I haven't seen anyone doing that in ages around here...thanks, jim
Sorry, tyvex has a limited life due to UV exposure I think 6 months and it needs replacement. Tar paper isn't limited the same. I have to use tar paper over tyvex because I'm partially covering things with Black walnut and there are some reactions between tyvex and certain woods (like cedar) To prevent that reaction while keeping the city happy I use tar paper over tyvex.
The siding is very important. House wrap is not designed to keep the rain out. It only stops drafts while allowing the house to breath. Spend every good day you can on weatherizing the outer shell of the house - make it the number one priorty.
Tar paper shack,
I was a young boy my parents used to tell me that if I didn't behave theyed take me to the poor part of town and I'd have to live in a tar paper shack. Some homes had only tar paper on them for years.
Tyvex on the other hand lasts six months at best before UV light causes it to decay past it's effectiveness.
One of the locals was giving his old house a redo a few years ago...down to bare studs along one side of the house with tarpaper tacked on to keep the wind and bugs out.
Came home from the tavern late at night pretty well hammered, went in to use the john, propped one hand against the wall to keep his balance.....and fell out into the back yard.
JH...What Wettrooper said is exactly right in my opinon. I'm not huge fan
of house wrap.Kinda think its a scam personally but....I persoanly still like felt paper..........None the less.things need to breath to a certain extent IMHO. I'll NEVER use house wrap until the day I use all organic coinsiding products such as plywoods with no formaldahides and carpeting.....the same............etc etc.....Lets totally lock in all the poisonous materials in plastic (Tyvek or what the fux ever) into our family enviorment. Kinda pizzies me off with all the companies that are gonna tie us in all tight and neat into a HOME that is filleddddddddddddddd with poisen......Oh joy! I know that so many of you famous long time posters are down on me but usees what in defense ...My unconventional attitiude and ways of looking at the ol' barn door aint in my world as "I" see it. IMHO.......I'd NEVERRRRRRRRRRR lock my HOME in "PLASTIC".....Sooooooooooooo sorreeeeeeeeeee my broters and sisters. Tyvek in my soul is death to good families if you consider what your locking in......If you have it "All" together in a perfect enviorment .......well...coolllllllLets lock N Load my brothers an sisters butttttttttt..Just think about this one...Lets take a huge lock tight baggie alongside all the wonderful inventions of insulating our cribs and cover it in a sort of condom (get my drift my friends) ( the suppliers are some like Dow that gave us wonderful cleaning products we still (except me use today,,,,They also are the company that came up with napolm......ok ok sorry to take you all away from an easy thread ya'll.... what was the question again? House wrap..oh yeh.....Ok so wrap your entire house and feel warm..........think about that and all kinda things from the big companies that produce AND EARN............well.... Home Depot and Lowes are on the lowwwwwww end of the totem pole that yer all screamin about.......... in our and our kids world y'all think about a way bigger TODAY pix.....Kinda bettin theyre there to throw yer asses off the real issue HD and Lowes alongside Dow,etc etc,,,,,,call me paronoid but c'mon y'all.............the air we breath..............Sorry Jimmy Carter (you rock my broter,,youalway have inan unconventional yeee ha society(....Youve been put down way too much and Bill?,,,,,well....Why couldnt ya wait for the BJ?......Reckon cause yer alive.......And as fer
