I am in the process of extending a fireplace chimney because of poor draft. After removing the cement wash and the stone cap I noticed frost on the brick (it had been below freezing in recent days in Detroit). I know water is entering the chimney through the mortar joints. The chimney was built with reclaim commons which are soft and porous. I intend to tell the homeowner that the chimney must be sealed to prevent the incursion of water but I don’t know what sealer to recommend; I’m only familiar with Thompson’s Masonry Sealer but I’m sure there are products out there superior. Can anyone help? Thanks, Vito
