I’m a sucker for free stuff. I got a small load of pine and clear fir that was sitting in a damp garage for a long time. They all have a lot of grey mildew stains. I would like to use them with a clear finish. Any ideas on how to clean them up (without too much work, of course) so that will take a finish evenly afterwards?

Run them through the planer about 3/32" per side. Or, buff with rotten stone. Sometimes, the staining actually adds visual interest. You just might be looking at it differently. I used a bunch of mold-stained pine for side boards, sofa table tops, etc. and finished clear with Deft. People loved them.
