At the end of a dw job I’ll always end up with part of a bucket of mud. Always handy to have a bit of mud. Problem is that if I don’t use it for awhile I open the bucket to find a layer of black mold on top. I know I’m forgetting something simple. How do I prevent mold and how do I save what’s left? Just skim off the top? I know I’m going to feel like an idiot when I get the answer. Thanks.

are you putting the plastic sheet back on it when you close the lid?
Yep.
I think some diluted bleach floating on top of the mud will help.
To avoid mold just pour water on top of the mud then snap the lid on tight to keep the water from evaporating.
Once there is mold - get rid of the mud. Tough enough fighting mold on drywall without adding new mold spores.
That's what I've been doing.
