Do you guys ever compare the two monthly issues? My business partner and I do just for fun being we have different backgrounds. I think this month JLC has FHB beat as they articles seem more “new” and useful for us. Sorry FHB 😉
Lets see what next month brings?

Yeah,
I think we need both. I am new to JLC. I have been with FHB since issue #1
I have been going thru the archive issues at JLC and have learned mucho.
We no longer have to have boxes of old issues we can search electronically!
I still haven't gotten my JLC this month, but saw the FHB at my parents house. So I can't vote yet.
I did see William Dillon's article online in the new JLC and that is one of my new top favorite articles of all time. :-)
How about a Forum challenge?
There are people over there(JLC) Dissin the Breaktimers
one of um said he was afraid to come over here
Rumble?
It is kinda like an alternate universe (Sienfeld)
they have their own Frenchie and he is polite (:
I made the big mistake of signing up for and using the JCL forum. I learned quickly they have a big imagination about their skills and trades. They are quick to spot us (me) as amateurs and spend considerable time telling non-pros to go elsewhere for answers.
Yet I find they ask each other the same questions that amateurs ask.....
The heck with them. I find FHB much, much more friendly and helpful. AND most FHB'er have a sense of humor.
I deleted my JCL bookmark.
To be fair, they are very clear up front that only pros should be posting.
Good thing we're so friendly over here!
What is JLC?

I deleted JCL also, but am keeping jlconline.com :-)
we'll get Tim to write for us sooner or later.
oh my, I had no idea that I accidentally posted this comment to Tim. whoops :)

Justin,
I lost most of my address book, email me so I've got your address if you still have mine. Seems like many times I email through the forum here and I never get a reply. Probably because I still use a hotmail email address :-)
Justin,
Did you get my email reply? I got your email, and emailed you back, but was wondering if you got it?
Tim
yes sir, I got it. I was out of town today - I will get back to you on Monday morning.Justin Fink - FHB Editorial

Me too - and I even wrote an article for 'em!

yup.
for years JLC the mag has won pretty much each and every month.
less #### ... more info ... and they don't have a first year art director always trying to play with the layout ... which now sucks in FHb.
FHb is still worth buying ... but not worth what it used to be.
dumbed down for more diy's.

I haven’t ever seen a need to compare FHB to JLC – there’s no comparison. FHB wins hands down every time. The same goes for the forums. I will say however, that I find Tim’s articles to be of a very high standard.
JLC targets small remodeling contractors, which is my guess as to why you might’ve found it more useful. FHB targets a much larger range of consumers, and IMHO, has much better information. FHB’s articles are also presented in a way that I find much more enjoyable to read.
I primarily subscribe to JLC for their business and legal articles. (FHB doesn’t have these departments.) I also like Tim Uhler’s articles as well. As to whether JLC is more professional, well, it wasn’t to long ago that they described the basic technique of wire nailing as a trick of the trade in “On the Job.” When I discussed it at the JLC forum for one of my previous “Tricks of the Trade” threads, I ended up having to explain it in tradesmen’s “baby talk” just so most of the posters over there could understand it.
There are of course, some very knowledgeable people in JLC that aren’t in FHB, such as Bob Kovacs and Tim Uhler. However, the people who hold JLC on a pedestal because it only targets professionals, and who think that this somehow makes it’s readers more intelligent, are simply deluding themselves.
One other thing, FHB and its readers are much more open minded than JLC and theirs. I seriously doubt you would get away with a thread like this promoting FHB at the JLC forum for very long.

Keep in mind I was just referring to THIS month's issue, not the mag nor forum as a whole.
And just for the record, we are not just remodeling contractors...we just do it now as its so freaking slow here in Floirda. Most of the stuff we (used to) do is new or commercial.

Thanks for the compliments, we try hard. For what it's worth, I agree 100% about Tim's articles. They are terriffic. <!----><!----><!---->Justin Fink - FHB Editorial

The article about pimping the garage was different.
The stuff on the floor with chips of plastic spread around was way different.
FHB has a lot of wasted white space, 20 years ago it was a hell of a lot better mag.

I wrote a nice reply to your post, but I thought better of it and went back to hit the delete button.Justin Fink - FHB Editorial

Pass it along.
I will agree with others, the Forums here are definitely a better group.
Too many big egos over there, all looking for somebody to jump.
There's a plumbing forum like it, if you're not a Master Plumber you will probably cause great harm to yourself and others if you attempt a faucet washer on your own.

Fine Homebuilding is great, but more entertainment. I learn a lot about product, tools and less about methods.
JLC is more useful for me when it comes to methods. A couple issues ago I learned two methods that were 'breakthrough' for me. First was how to shim window extension jambs with drywall screws--went out immediately after that article and trimmed out a house that way. Second was 'drywall for small jobs' where I learned about using a giant lambswool roller and corner flushers for inside corners, which I also promptly ran out and did.
I still get equally excited when I pull either from the mailbox though. Magazines about MY WORLD!
I enjoy both as well. I've been a FHB subscriber since 1984 or 85. In both magazines there are winner and loser articles, but sometimes it depends on your interests and needs so maybe that can always be said about a magazine.
You can't beat the FHB forums. (except perhaps when you have a tile issue the folks at John Bridge are also great) Great people and ideas and solutions right here.
