Just bought a new $70.00 mortar gun this morning to make tuck pointing easier. Couldn’t get it to work. After about 8 inches of mortar, the gun would sieze up. I tried a thinner mix and got about 12 inches of runny mortar before it siezed up again. It seems the mortar gets the moisture squeezed out and then is to thick to pass through the nozzle(if I squeeze any harder the handle is going to break.) Did I waste my money? Some input from someone that has experience with one of these would be appreciated.

I have had similar experience with a grout bag (Like a cake decorating bag) I was told that it would only work with grouts and mortars mixed with latex additive. I have followed the advice and have had good results. Good Luck.

Mr. Svenson
What mix are you using? Our guys use grout bags
like crazy. We dont use laytex. Our guys usually
use type N or type S mortar mixed one part mortar
to two parts sand. Increasing you mortar content
may solve your problem. I also recommend you use
fine masons' sand not coarse or "sharp" sand. If
you try a grout bag, squeeze only with your back
hand, guiding with front hand. We prefer a
flexible end on the bag. If it gets plugged up,
you can pinch the end and mash up the clump. Also
the flex tip can fit into joints that a metal tip
cant get into.
Hope this helps.
Over and out.
*I too use a grout bag. a few things to consider are to be sure sand is free of small stones ( i mix my own mortar) and be sure that it is THOROUGHLY mixed. If not, those dry clumps will stoip you again and again. Kinda like getting the lumps outta pancake batter. Latex additiove may help, though I've never used it. I paid about 8 bucks for my grout bag.Pete Draganic
