i need to do some tuck pointing on my 100 stone foundation. i have heard/ read on several occasions that you should not use the premixed bags of mortar in these situations because the mixes and lime content, etc. are different than what was used originally and could cause a problem. but i am having trouble finding a recipe to use to mix myself? any advice?

It's been discussed here often, lots of good information and experience available using the Advanced Search feature, above the left column. Try "motar mix" as the search phrase.
I found a great mason here uses 4 sand, 1 N or S , and 1 HYDRATED lime, and I used it, and it is a good mix. Ya have to watch for shinkage ( keep it wet ) and it's soft enough not have problems with the sandstone and limestone here.
