question: I have a stone chaise for my fireplace, and a half log I want to use as a mantle above my fireplace. What would be the most secure and safe way to attach the half log to a 2 x 6 bond?

What's a 2x6 bond ?
*While were asking, just to be certain I am not assuming the obvious, what's a "half log" too?Pete Draganic

A 2x6 bond is basically the same as a joist bond that is exposed so you can attach a deck from the house. The chaise was framed in around the fire place insert, then stone applied around the framing. Except for the exposed 2x6 which the is encased all around by the stone. The 1/2 log is basically a log sawed length wise. What I would like to do, is attach the log with the sawed side up. Giving it the rustic mantle effect. Thanks

Are we to assume that you mean a 1/4 log? Two sides must be flat, one to serve as the mantle top, one for flat against the fireplace wall, unless you don't intend to use the top as a shelf.
*Well, I think the 2x6 is kind of in the way and this would be easier if it wern't there. Is it small enough so the half log will hide it ?I would vote for some wrought iron deer antlers supporting it like brackets. One thing we did was get a driftwood beam from the beach, about 10" x 14" and buried two galvanized bolts in the masonry, about 1" dia. x 24" with galv. Ogee washers (dock washers ) and big (BIG) square galv. nuts. The problem is supporting it so it looks supported, there are any number of things you can bury in the masonry that will actually do the job, but it looks like a "Hail Mary" (no visible means of support)Can you remove enough of the stone to relay some of it into two haunches to support the half log ? And while you're at it , lose the 2x6 bond, wasn't that laid up so you could attach a formal mantle to it ? Am I right, is it in the way now ? Or am I looking at this wrong ?Someday I'm going to have Gaby give me a lesson in transmitting pictures . Or maybe Joe Fusco.....nah.

Right now it's a 1/2 log. You are quite correct in assuming a possible 1/4 log. That would be one of the steps I may take in this solution.
*The log used to be 10" in dia. Since the 2x6 is not actually 6", but rather 5 1/4", there would only be about 1/4 showing. Which I could use a moulding, or something to hide the little section. The 2x6 bond, believe it or not, wasn't made for a formal mantle, but for the log. The finish carpenter left before finishing the job. He had other pressing matters!!(?).

Steve (jpeg'd me a photo of the scene of the crime)
looks like a massive river stone fireplace, about 6' to 8' wide, floor to ceiling. About 3' above the firplace opening is a 2x6, natural finish, mortared into the stone. I guess the 2x6 is about 6' long so the stonework must be about 8'.
Any ways, I don't know how to send you a pic. and I don't have a scanner, but I could fax you a sketch. Email me your fax number. I'll sketch you up a timber bracket, so the top of the half log is just above the top of the 2x6, do some rough scribing on the back of the log so it sits flush to the stone, lag the top of the bracket to the 2x6, and let the bottom press against the stonework.
but you know, come to think of it, Joe Fusco posts a lot more detailed pictures than that one, and you apparently know your way around the computer, so I don't know why you bumped up against the file size limitation.
and another thing, log home builders detail the type of mantle you want ALL the time, so if you put that picture up on the board you'll bring 'em out like flys to honey, they'll be all over your post like white on rice, \
stop........I've got to go try some carpentry skills on Tom
b Happy Thanksgiving to all !
