I just finished residing an old house with Hardie siding. The electrician just poked wires through the walls for the lights and outlets (which were not there before). So I’m left to figure out how to put in the fixtures. I’ve worked with blocks before with vinyl, and that was all they sold at the local store, but I have no intention of using vinyl blocks with Hardie siding.
So, what other solutions are out there for blocks? I figure if nothing else, I can fabricate and paint wood blocks.
Is there another solution I’m missing?
Any great ideas for cutting the opening in the Hardie? I figured maybe a template and router.
Finally, do the boxes then get installed, I assume, into the sheathing?
Thanks, Brian

our contractor used hardie trim to make into blocks. these are, I believe, glued onto sheathing (not quite sure) but light hardware goes through and into sheathing so it doesn't really matter (or so I think).
Would a cellular PVC product work for your blocks?
I've used a variety of wood blockouts, but on the house I'm residing right now, I had some wide Azek scraps left from a previous job....I'll try to get some pics tomorrow...
If you're doing much F/C, it helps to have a 4 1/2" grinder with a diamond blade on site, for cleaning up corners, etc., and with the diamond blade, it's pretty easy to do a nice job of cutting out for a blockout or making repairs. If you need to cut a curve or a arc or a circle, a tile bit in a rotozip does the trick.
