I am building a two story garage/storage area, and I am making brackets for the rake overhang to match the house. Overhang is just 12 inches. My question concerns mounting the brackets. As I see it, there are two choices:
A) Mount the brackets to the gable wall over the house wrap and side around them or
B) Mount the brackets over the siding (Hardi-plank with 5″ exposure) after cutting a “saw tooth” pattern in the back of the brackets to accomodate the siding.
Any suggestions on the best technique? I plan on bolting the brackets through studs in the wall with carriage bolts.

I would do A, allowing just a bit of expansion space for the bracket and caulking it.
And often the brackets are just decorative. You can probably affix them with some glue and stainless steel nails.
