I have a problem with the noise from our heat pump (the type that takes the heat out of the air). When we put it in four years ago we were told we would hardly notice the niose so it went on a concrete pad outside our bedrooms. our bedroom is on the second floor and it doesn’t really bother us (well sometimes my wife) but the real problem is that now we have a two year old who gets woken up by it nightly. he is on the main floor right on the other side of the wall. there is no real option to move it along the wall as there is another bedroom that makes up the rest of it’s length. And this room is going to be occupied by the brother/sister on the way. I do have unlimited space to move it perpendicular away from the wall but i’m not sure about having the lines run under the ground or in some sort of protected conduit. the furnace is currently about 8-10 feet away from the outdoor unit just inside the crawl space. Any noise dampening / relocating sugestions would be very much appreciated. thanks in advance. –Angus

What is the age of the house?
What kind of insulation?
What kind of windows?
My guess is that most of the noise is comming in through the windows.
The house was new at the time of installation four years ago.
2x6 walls with fiberglass batts
no windows in that wall at all
there is a air in take on that side
and yes T White the slab does touch so i did think about cutting a strip out.
just tell the kid to get over it.
What is the exact source of the noise? Some units have cheap sheet metal that will make a lot of noise. Reinforcing it will help alot.Another option might be to just put in a white noise generator.
what would you reinforce with? bolt on bars with pading to dampen the vibrations i guess.
That would work.If it is just like flimsy sheet metal then just gluing some sound deading pads or even foam insulation would probably work.
yes sticking on pads would probably the easiest. there is alot of caging around the unit that is bolted on so i might try adding a neopreen washer under each bolt. I will definatly try all this befor going to the expense abd hassel of moving it. thanks
My first question is does the concrete slab touch/join the house? If it does that may be the major source of your problem.
My old York heatpump would shake the floor and you had to turn up the TV when it turned on.
When I replaced it I moved it at the same time. Replaced it with a Heil unit and this unit just purrs! You can hear the air move but no shakes, thumps or vibriction.
My next doors unit was replaced 2 years ago with another york and its just as bad as the original! Glad my room is at the other end of the house!!
Take a walk and listen to the other units around you to see if the sounds are normal.
thanks good idea. mine is a lenox
