MS Messenger AAAAAARRGGH!!!

| Posted in General Discussion on September 28, 2003 06:56am

As of late I’ve been spammed repeatedly while on line with these Messenger Service Pop-Ups. Sometimes 5 or 6 in a burst. Mostly they advertise how to get rid of them for $$$ or “Hi I’m an 18 yr old aerobics instructor. I just had

# for the first time and gee… my friend had a bottle of massage oil, three buckets of chicken, 30 feet of bungee cord and a camera handy…”

You don’t need to pay money to get rid of these things. You can manually turn off the Messenger in Windows XP/2000/98/95. This fantastical guy explains how…much better than I ever could…

    Ever been in the middle of your work concentrating hard and out of the clear blue you get a message that pops up in your screen that says messenger? usually something like get your free diploma with out going to school or free porn etc.. well heres how to put an end to all that.

    In windows 2000:

    Click Start->Programs->AdministrativeTools->Services
    Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
    Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
    Click the STOP button.
    Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
    Click OK

    Windows XP:

    ClickStart->Control Panel
    Click Administrative Tools
    Double click Services
    Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
    Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
    Click the STOP button.
    Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
    Click OK

    Windows 98/ME:

    Remove the file and printer sharing from your network configuration

        Pop Up Stopper was one of the sites that was spamming me.

        The Messenger Service spam exploits a feature in Windows that is intended for network applications (such as, receiving a conformation from the printer room). This feature is not neccessary for most home systems so why not just turn it off?

        You don't even need to be on line to get these things. I was amazed that 3 or 4 would pop up as I was shutting my computer down.

        Sure enough, it was an inside job.  Turtleneck

        I replaced the free version of Pop-Up Stopper w/ the free one at Google.  The Google version works lots better.

          Thanks.....I can't even figure out the pop up stopper.

          Whats the link?

            Some things happen so fast....

            NEWS FLASH!!!!!  THIS JUST IN!!!!!!

            This came in VIA email as I was reading your post.....

             ICQ (I seek you)I believe it was the original instant messenger. Developed many years ago, in Israel. Supposedly something to do with keeping worldwide Jews in touch with each other.Bought by AOL.Very quickly turned into one of the most virus/trojan/worm infested software out there. There are very many backdoor programs that ride on, or otherwise exploit the ICQ software. There are even more malicious programs designed to use ICQ to get into your computer and do your computer damage.None of the other instant messenger type programs are much, if any, better.
