Master bath reno moving along, will be installing Warm Tiles under natural stone tile floor. Question: Pros and cons of mud bed vs self levelling concrete for setting the warm tile. Looking at about 80 square feet.

How thick? I believe a mud bed should be at least 1-1/2" and the self leveler is good to about 1/2". Are you just going over the cable or do you need to bring the floor up? I raised the floor up with plywood then durarock, put down the cable and put down a scratch coat of thinset over the cable before laying the tile. Don't know if I'd leave the plastic strips in again since they created high spots. I think going over the entire floor with self leveler would have been better but I hate working with that stuff. -Ed
Just looking to bury the cable. Used the plastic cable strips last time I did it and just applied a thicker layer of thinset to cover the cabe and set the tile all in one swell foop. Did think 1/4" would be too thin for a mud bed, despite 3/4" Advantek flooring and 1/2" Durock. Don't relish self levelling that big an area either. Like the idea of setting the cable in a thin scratch coat of thinset.Let's not confuse the issue with facts!
