I don’t know why but my every waking moment is consumed with lusting after this tool case. I got it in my mind about three weeks ago that I needed one. I spent the majority of New Years researching and searching. I finally came up with this case.http://www.chicagocase.com/product.php?catid=15&id=23
I like my Veto pro pack just fine but I really want one of these. I guess I’m sub consciously wanting to change my tool storage image. To make matters worse today we built a security vestibule. They had a technician there from Puerto Rico onsite to assist and he had one. I couldn’t take my eyes off of it all day.
The thing that has kept me from getting it so far is I didn’t want to blow any extra money. But the lust is getting stronger all the time. No kidding I dream about it at night.
Talk me into it. Or talk me out of it. What do you guys think? Should I? Or shouldn’t I?

The look similar to Pelican cases, of which I have 3 or 4 for photo gear. Light weight and they protect your gear really well as you heave them in the truck. Personally I wouldn't switch from my Veto to one of them, but they do have some sex appeal.
Well with one of these I can carry everything I need in one unit. Meter, toner focus monitor, all of it. And it would look pretty fly when I opened it up and all that was sitting there.

I think you should get it. My feeling is when you work in a particular area (in your case the field) small perks are the thing that makes it worthwhile. Otherwise why bust your butt? Office guys do the blackberry thing etc. Of course I wonder if you get one and put your tools in it how you will work. I can't imagine you finding it in your truck ever again once you put it in there. :-) DanT
If I get it I can put so much in it that I'll be able to see inside my truck. LOL
Since our regular gig is slowing way down I've been doing a lot of alarm and video. And I suspect it's going to stay that way for a while. I've been laying it out in my head. I want to get the winged pallet in the picture for the upper. And a regular pallet for the lower. Then under that I want the thick foam that you can cut out. I want to put my multi meter in there, my focus monitor, my phasing meter, and my cat5 verifier thing majigy. That way when I come into a place to work I can set up in a corner and open it up and have my own enviroment.
Then when they come up with a tv show called trick my tool case. I can get a 110v docking station set up with a coffee pot and a blender for smoothies. Maybe a rice cooker.

I've got to work a few hours on double time today. I might just take that extra cash and get it. Or I might surf Ebay this week and see if another sweet deal like the one above pops up.

first you have to understand how ebay bid system works as far ,you may bid 10.oo but if high bid is a 2.00 your bid will go in as 2.25.
i've been using auctionsniper http://auctionsniper.com/ now for probably 3 years, never had it miss a bid,now i don't mean i never got outbid,it just always placed my bid correctly.i did do some checking around a while back and there are several companies out there doing this but all of there cost was much higher than auctionsniper.
read on the fees but this is what i remember,.25 cents is min. charge, from there it is 1% of the bid with a max charge of 10.00 [say your buying a 25k truck]. you can go in anytime before the auction ends and put the auction # in and your max. bid amount. lets say there is 4 days till auction ends and i enter my bid,but the next day i find the same item at lowes.i can pull my bid anytime up until the last 10 seconds of the auction, nobody knows i was ever interested. thats one advantage.
also if your using this, don't bid on it thru ebay, thats just letting someone know your out there, just put it in auctionsniper and sneak in at the last 7 seconds:]
example,i found a zero turn mower this fall i really wanted so wnet in to auction sniper entered 2900.00 and set back. about a hour before the end a couple guys started bidding on it but they both stopped at 1850.00 ,my bid hit at the end and got it bought, now the second to last guy had bid 2000.00 so my bid hit at 2050.00 and before he could rebid it was over,he even emailed the seller that he would pay more, but to late.the charge on that was 10.00 ,
any other questions holler,it's free to sign up and if you don't use it it doesn't cost anything. to really get a feel for it ,it doesn't hurt to buy a couple 5.00 items for the heck of it. larryif a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?
Very cool. Thank you.
"Woke up quick, at about noon. Just knew that I had to be in Compton soon."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChIdFwQwoYM&feature=related
'...and sneak in at the last 7 seconds..."oh - sose youse that guy, eh?why, I oughta....."there's enough for everyone"
yep,me and probably a couple million others. it didn't take long on ebay to figure out that the auction didn't start till 15 seconds before the end.bidding before that is wasting money ,unless it's something nobody else wants or there are hudreds for sale.
if ya can't beat us,might as well join us.if you want you can tweak to 5 seconds.............just don't bid against me.lol larryif a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?
don't bid on it thru ebay
How/where do you make your bids?
Say your watching a tool that you want to bid on, how do YOU go about doing it? I assume you go to auctionsniper, enter the item no. ?
Doug
yes,of course you need to be reg with ebay ,but you don't bid on there site. go to auctionsniper ,enter your bid and let them hit it. doesn't matter if your over in the next state,it will bid for you and let you know if you won or not.
it will also notify you if say your max bid is 10.00 and the item goes to 15.00 the day before it ends,so if you want you can revise your bid.
my stratgy is,i will give 10,so i bid 11 if i don't get it i tried ,on to the next one.
go to auctionsniper.com and read and registar and play with it on a couple small things to see how it's going to work. larryif a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?
go to auctionsniper
While I was waiting I went and signed up, even bid on a few items to see how it works.
One feature that I like and you mentioned it, is that I can withdraw from an auction without ever having been there. Also the no playing games thing, just leave the bid and forget about it.
Thanks
Doug

Got it pretty much set up. I had to work a half a day today (double time Kacheeng) and when I got back to the shop I decided to move my tools over. Had to totaly rearrange two bins in my truck to get a place for it to fit. It's a monster. Here's some pics for the curious. It will be nice for installs. I left my electric tools in my electric bag. For the small amount of money involved think of the enjoyable buzz you'll get off the thing.
Might even be able to milk it for a couple weeks, and think of the image portrayal to the people you meet on the job as you arrive with a higher end collection of tools,
the air of sufficiency emanating out from your being, no longer just the fat kid with a toolbox showing up for his 9to5 job.
Everyone likes to see quality tools on their site as it helps them achieve the thought of well being seeing that 'the man' is now on their turf taking care of business so they need not give it a second thought,
and the protection of valuable tools being enclosed in a weather tight case as well, hellman, what are you waiting for?

When I worked for IBM I carted a smaller wheeled case around for a while and got tired of lugging it up and down stairs, getting gravel and snow in the wheels etc. I ended up with a light weight 5" thick case. I could throw on the Alaska Air Lines planes and not care if it got dinged and was much easier to pick up and put in the trunk of my car.
There is a weight and space penality for the wheels and handle that I did not like. I found out that I could get 90% of what I needed into a smaller case and just go back to the car for the odd tool if I needed it which was very seldom.
Some of my coworkers had it down to a small canvas bags but they didn't work on the large system printers that I worked on. I think my bag and tools was around 30-35 lbs. I hauled that around for so long (33+ years) my right arm is longer than my left, found that out when I had to get a suite tailored for my youngest's wedding.

Ok, when debating the spending of the dollar as opposed to knowing you are already going to spend it and just deciding on what,
it is important before a final decision to hear the other side of the story. That is to say why you shouldn't buy the whatever.
In this case I can't think of any but will create a few fabrications in order to give you the feeling that you have expounded on all the whys and whynots
and thus feel better about have spent yer liquor/crazy/fun money on something as horrid as another tool receptor.
After the aforementioned buzz of a new tool has worn off is this case going to be a functional piece in your arsenal?
Does it look like the idea of having the thing will pass by quickly if you don't buy it, thus proving that it is more of a compulsive buy than a well thought-out addition?
Do the monies for this tool come from designated savings for the wife's wellbeing, and thus yours, as in an anniversary or birthday account?
Can you continue to get by in the same manner as you have if you do not buy the thing without regretting or getting a case of the shouldofs?
Have you extinguished all other options by thoroughly reviewing every possibility of other case purchases without finding a more desirous commodity to add to your collection?
Would you now almost sell yer soul for the opportunity of owning this wonderful future artifact that will be sitting in an upper tier shelving of the garage at this time next year?
Fully cover all these questions before moving to the next step of getting your card out and holding it in your hand while you sit facing the monitor readying to push the add to cart tab.

Well, I openly admit that a great reason I buy discount bottom basement bargain pricing is generally just for the fun of it. Thrill of the hunt kind of thing.
And in the associated fields of tools and materials the results are fun to have around and receive creative enjoyment finding ways to use the stuff.
So, there ARE worse vices in the world one could be involved in.
I mean worse thing that happens is you end up building a shed to house the materials for the next shed ad infinitum.

Truck boxes are tuff to get right. I've seen so many that don't work. The ones that go across the bed behind the cab are just about useless. But you see them all over the place. And they have a lift kit and large tires on the truck too. Either they are young or stupid is all I can say. Maybe both. I went that route with a large knack box when I was younger.

Who makes that? Looks just bout right. The tools are on wheels and the two top shelves are high enough so i don't have to reack all the way down to the floor.

I see you have a bad case of "fear of case commitment".
I understand they're still searching for the cure.
Hang in there in the meantime!

My mistake.
Lust is good... buic
My patience is surprising the heck out of me. I've been playing the Ebay game. Missed a couple of auctions by only a couple of bucks. But I can wait.
Actually busted a guy trying to scam me. Lost the bid on a case. Some guy in Italy tried to trick me into thinking he was the original seller and was giving me a second chance offer. After a couple of Emails my gut told me he was scamming. Sure enough I went back to the original aution page I had stored and emailed the seller directly from the page and he confirmed that he had never Emailed me with a second chance.

I got a partial but near full 250' roll of 16-3 ultraguard tough trex cable made by TPC wire off ebay for $.08. That stuff goes for around $400.

You gotta be careful about the weird emails about stuff that you bid on on ebay. They try to scam me all the time.
It's been over a year since I've bought anything off Ebay. I watch a lot of auctions but if it isn't exactly what I want then I pass.
That's a pretty sweet deal you got there.

I got some not so good deals sometimes too.
Hey it is cold here in Ohio. I had to spray the latch on my dogs tie out cable. Put her out and it froze solid for some reason after 10 minutes. That was wicked cold. Did you get high winds last night? Messed up a lot of stuff here, nothing too major. Lightning hit an old 1890's bar and blew the brick chimney up like a bomb.
I'm over in Youngstown. It's freaking fridgid. Locks on my utility bed boxes keep freezing up.

ya, and just look at all that other neat stuff he buys too! heh heh
Youngstown? Man, you were almost knocking on my backdoor. They nicknamed Youngstown 'Little Detroit' for the high per capita murder rate.
Youngstown is where my freaking buddy got pulled over for carrying loaded without a permit with me in the truck. Sucker owes me big now.
Hope you had no unusual incidents to report while there.
Peach full,easy feelin'.
I'm still in Youngstown. I'm going to be in Martins Ferry next week. Then back here for three weeks then I don't know where. Most of our work has been in the suburbs. We had one week in the the hood. Not too bad.
I was cursing you today as I froze my azz off. You just had to declare the end of winter didn't ya.

Man, you've been outside working in single digits with these winds?
Too bad, you could have used that old layer of fat you use to carry around as a buffer.

No I lucked out. I'm doing alarm and video work. All inside. If I was having to work outside I'd be hunting your azz. LOL
BTW. I bought a case Sunday night. More then the one I wanted but I was able to to pick up a $300.00 one for $166.00 shipping included. It's a Chicago rebranded by Crafstman. Pretty sweet deal it has three pallets, and foam in the bottom that I can cut out for my meters etc.
