I am project manager for a small home builder in Madison, WI. I just received a call from a customer who bought a house from this company about nine years ago (long before my time here). She is complaining of soot on the exterior walls. The soot is worse at the joint between ceiling and wall, outlines the shape of the studs and nail heads, and has coated the cold air return. She says her house is not humid, she uses the bath fan, the walls never have condensation on them, etc. She insists it is soot, not mold. The furnace has been checked professionally and received a clean bill of health. No fireplace, no other source of heat than the furnace. This house is fairly far away and I have not viewed it personally.
Has anyone ever seen the like? Where is the soot coming from if not the furnace? Why is it only depositing on the exterior walls? Is it possible to mistake mold for soot? The warranty on this house is long since expired, but I would love to be able to help this customer with information at the very least.
