Can I nail my flooring parallel with my 2×10 joists over a full basement? I will be nailing into 5/8ths plywood which is over 3/4 in. spruce boards. The long way of the bedroom is parallel to the joists and as you enter the room it would look much better if the flooring is laid the long way. The house is 23 yrs. old and everything is sound and solid.

*I asked the same question in my 'nearby' post. I have the same problem, I think. (I'm going to have to re-check the nailing pattern in the subfloor, after I get everything cleared off of it.) Regards, Buck Williams

CMB, your answer is yes. The combination of 5/8ths ply and 3/4 subfloor. Ideal situation is the seams of the plywood and the seams of the subfloor are diagonal (45 degrees) or perpendicular (90 degrees) to each other.
Are the 3/4 maple boards T&G or S4S? Angle nailing or face nailing? Either way, use 2 inch fasteners.

Thanks George ,the maple is 2 1/4 x 3/4 tongue and groove, common grade, purchased from quebec for 1.60 a sq. ft. The subfloors are perpendicular to each other. I bought a porta nailer with 2in. nails. One thing makes me scratch my head , why leave 3/4 inch space on the sides when it is nailed down with about a thousand nails, I would think 1/4-3/8 ths would be plenty, especially on a room only 9x12 . Then you could elimanate the stupid looking quarter round on the perimeter

CMB, right on the space... for such a small room, use 3/8 to1/2 inch on either side... You ARE lifting the base moulding right? Apply the base over the gap, so no gap shows. Also, if the PortaNails give you problems, try the Primatech T-head nails instead. They seem to run better and hold firmer. They fit the PortaNailer.

Thanks George you have been an immense help because this is all new to me. Yes the mop board will be put on later. Thanks
