When nailing 1×6 exterior trim do you use common or finish nails? When building houses 20yrs ago I recall nailing the trim with commons and the painters filling in the holes with glazing putty. My boss told me it holds the flat trim boards best.
Haven’t done exterior work in 20 yrs. Not much call for it when renovation highrise apartments in NYC.
Yesturday, I prepped for today and got the finish nailer ready with the galv. finish nails. Today, when I was climbing onto the scaffold with the fin. nailer I felt weird and realized this is not what I recall from 20yrs ago. Go figure.
So which is it? Common, finish or even siding nails?

it does depend whos painting it..if I'm painting it I like 2'' or 2 1/2'' stainless fin nails.
If somebudy else is doin it, I 'd use less expensive galvy. siding nails.
thats what painters get paid for. {G}

I use galvanized 8d or 10d common nails for most facia boards. I have used 15 gauge galvanized finish nails in the past, common nails hold better. I also use glazing compond for filling nail heads. If the job requires it I use Bondo to fill nail heads. Makes an invisible filler. Most of the time the glazing compound will do , if the facia or other trim is close to the ground i use Bondo.
