Not sure if this is done in the States its the first time I’ve used them.
Natural edge weatherboards they come delivered in log form with the log put in a kind of rotating lathe for want of a better description, the logs are sawn almost to the end and rotated each cut (obviously!)
This is a photo of how they arrived.

WE chainsaw about 300mm of each end and break the wb's away which leaves about a 100 mm centre.
The logs look pretty straight but thats just to lull you into thinking 'this won't be too bad' as soon as they are released all that built up tension is let loose so we have to number each board so the 'pattern' stays the same and the coverage is reasonable.Heres some boards on the wall.http://www.johnwalkerbuilders.com

Well I was sitting here thinking, "why would you do that?" But that makes a nice effect when they're installed. Variation on bookmatching.
What do you do with the cores?

Not sure what to do with the cores maybe stand them up and run a flag up them!
the boards are a nightmare to to measure up,I tried to get certain lengths to work boards but if they don't have logs you essiantly are supplied by the square metre, so you have to cut carefully, and the coverage on each board can range from 140mm (5.5 ") to 100mm (4") This photo shows how curved the boards are the one under the window follows the same curve as the other long boards.http://www.johnwalkerbuilders.com
That looks great, especially offset by the corrugated galv. I haven't seen much of that style clapboard in the states, but I did notice some this fall while driving around New York State for vacation. They're on some cabins in a little park. I took photos because a freind had mentioned wanting to use that style out here on the west coast.Nice work.zak
Are those "roladin". Being built in Germany?

Actually, some cedar clapboard is still made that way in the US (except for the live edge - haven't seen that), it's just not shipped on the log. (Expensive, though.) The reason that siding is sometimes cut this way is that it results in 100% quartersawn boards, and is thus more resistant to moisture and checking. Looks nicer, too, IMHO.
