Need builder in SW Connecticut

homebrew01 | Posted in Help/Work Wanted on May 14, 2002 05:27am

We have a 1938 cape, with a poorly added 70’s family room, and run-down galley kitchen. We want to tear down the old family room, and expand the kitchen with a new family room.  Probably includes a new foundation for the family room and the kitchen extension.

Is anyone interested ??

Sounds like you have a massive renovation planned.  I'm from SE CT so I can't help you specifically.

Are you working with an architect, or at least a structural engineer?  I'd think that either or both of them should be able to give you some trusted names.

    If you're going solo, why???

No, really, if you're solo try stopping by The Woodworkers Club of Norwalk on the Post Road in either Norwalk or Westport - right around the border there. (http://www.wodworkersclubnorwalk.com, I think). Been there a few times and seen some skilled crafts persons (hate that word) there from time to time - maybe they can give you a name or two.

    Good luck.

Our project is massive in comparison to all the small jobs we've done on the house, but I can't tell if it's massive enough to need an architect.  It could get a bit tricky tying into the old house, especially since the previous work was shoddy and ugly.

What town is your house located in?

      Dear TDKPE:

I may be interested or know someone competent if you haven't found everything/ everyone you need. Am at 203 384 0888. Despite the recorded message, I am still active in residential building and have impeccable references.

      Good luck.

      I'm located in Newtown.

We'd consider an architect, if we can swing the extra $ ...... or consider a creative builder that come up with some ideas other than our own .........

Newtown? You mean the home of the Taunton Press? My brother lives next door

over in Monroe and after putting him off for the last two months I'm going over

to his place to do some work for the next week to a week and a half. I'd be

glad to swing by an look at your project and at least give you some of my views

        on what you should do.

We're not really builders, we're remodelers, and I do think there is a distinctive

difference. If it 's not something that we can help you with directly I might

also be able to recommend another local contractor for you. I've been at my

desk a lot this week as I'm working on making over our company web site ( I

can't seem to connect to it right now so that's why I'm killing time reading

the Breaktime forums) but feel free to take a look at it when our server gets

back up to speed and give me a call (

or email me) if you think we might be able to help.

I grew up in Norwalk, and most of my family is still in the area (Hamden, New Haven, Danbury).  My brother has been contracting that sort of work for decades, and is presently on a project in Darien.  I'll ask him if he's interested in taking on any more work.  He usually does relatively big-ticket work (as I said, he's in Darien right now), but if you want, I'll send him your way.  Let me know.

        Be seeing you...
