Hi ALL
Does anyone have detail information for the installation of a large floating marble bench for a new steam shower?
We just finished the rough framing and it seems that everyone has their own opinion as to how to support a wall to wall 1 1/4 ” marble slab.
Recommendations on materials , and water proofing details would be greatly appreciated.
Scott
ps- I tried to do a search for any previous threads on this site and also the Bridge tile site to no avail

Greetings Scot,

are you 'simple but elegeant'?
How far wall to wall?
Your fabricator can epoxy SS rod on the underside of your slab. Check with them re: strength.
I've simply tiled them in place. Run your courses up on three walls, lay in stone and finish tiling.
NEVER had a problem yet.

I'd do it your way eric. I've done it that way too using granite.Way less hassle and if you use our friend Mr.Kerdie on the walls "first" I don't think anything'd get through. I never had a problem without Mr.Kerdie but ya never know..but WITH Mr. Kerdi the skies the limit. No?
Starting my Kerdi Tuesday soon as I tighten everything else up tomorrow...yeeeha : ) where's that cheesecake ya promised me dude...lol
Oh yeh...I'm Macrobiotic...don't eat cheesecake less its a vitual one..lol

About 10 years ago we build exactly the same idea (granite bench in a shower).
Here are my 2 cents thoughts; I would never just span a marble or granite 1/14" thick over any span unsupported. What you call marble is actually a stone (Only material from Carrera, Italy, is marble and I doubt that this the material you are using) Stone, even granite is not waterproof.
This was our situation: We build a wooden bench, sealed the heck out of all joints with waterproof flashing, silicone, installed the slab with thinset and sealed the edges and joints again. Worked beautifully for about 8 years. Then customer called and reported waterstains on the outside wall of the shower. First thought: condensation from the bath use. Wrong! After ripping the showerwall apart we found water (over the years) soaked through the granite, the Aquaboard and into the studsystem which was all rotten. All cornerseals were intact, the water came through the stonesurface.
Lesson: Isolate the stone from all other material. HO needs to seal the stone min. every 6 months. HO comments afterwards: The next time we do this in clear Acrylic
Thanks for the replys,
A bit more info:
The "designers" would like a 5' long ,15" deep marble bench.
They would like it to appear to be floating, but do not have a problem with it resting on suports on three sides.I was thinking of using Stainless steel suport , but I am not sure where to find this material in the necesary thickness?
The thought was to secure the SS with flashing above then install the CB , and then paint on the laticrete waterproof mebrane prior to setting the tile using a good thinset. Please let me know your thoughts?
thanks in advance for sharing
