I would appreciate a comparison of the Viking # 9450 vinyl replacement window with block frame, to the Certainteed #910 of similar components plus a vent safety lock. Double hung style. I am putting them into a 50’s era house with the old style wooden double hung with aluminum storm windows. I really like the idea of not having to disturb the out side shake siding and molding. Having the ability to measure things accurately and check for square do you think 1/8″ undersize on both dimensions would be enough. A visitor from knots , thanks RL36

I can't give you a comparison of the two brands as I've no experience with the Viking brand. I hope someone jumps in to cover the brand comparison.
As far as the ordering.............with most companies the opening size measurement yields a window production that is 1/8" smaller in width and 1-2" shorter in height than the actual opening size. The heighth difference is covered by an expanding top cap to allow for inserting the replacement window into the existing frame. These are normal allowances as per each manufacturer.........check the spec book of your final choice.
If you wish to order your replacement window to your exact size specifications you may do so by specifying/qualifying your dimensions to "actual window unit dimensions". Check the manufacturer's specs for height expansion distances.
If you do your own measuring you will be responsible for the results...if you err for lack of experience concerning peculiarities in certain conditions that can be found in the existing window frame..........then the windows are yours.......the window company will not take them back! Recessed spring balance systems in the existing windows can be the most deceiving!
As a seller of replacement windows I insisted on going to site and measure. Yes, on occassion I made a mistake and I ate the window......but I averted more mistakes and bad feelings by not allowing the consumer to order by his own measurements.
The terminology and methods set by the manufactured become the hidden snafu's which cause most of the errors! So let the salesman earn his due.....have him come and assess your old window system and measure. Then his experience and knowlege bears the burden of correctness.
Go ahead and do your measurements and use that to receive accurate pricing from the dealer..................but in the end let the burden fall to the building center/lumberyard. Doing your own install will save you $$$......stay away from all those "snake oil" sellers of "the absolute best" windows that advertise deals to good to be true.......or come to your house with a heavy selling method. Go see a reputable local building supply.
Good Luck

Another option is to use wood replacement kit for wood double hung windows (such as Norco's Sash Pak). These are even easier than vinyl and don't require removing any trim or new trim.
Any good wood window dealer can get them for you.
