I AM PLANNING TO INSTALL 7 1/4″ PINE CLAPBOARD SIDING ON A BEACH
COTTAGE.THE SIDING IS APPX. 15 YEARS OLD BUT HAS BEEN KEPT IN A
BUILDING IN THE DRY. IT IS ROUGH SEWN ON ONE SIDE AND SMOOTH ON
THE OTHER.THE COTTAGE HAS 2 LAYERS OF 3/4 MARINE PLYWOOD ON THE
OUTSIDE NOW. IT IS PAINTED, BUT PAINT IS PEELING IN PLACES.CAN
I INSTALL THE SIDING DIRECTLY TO THE OUTSIDE WALLS OR DO I NEED
SOME TYPE OF VAPOR BARRIER BETWEEN THE TWO? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND
DOUBLE OR SINGLE NAILING? AND WHAT TYPE OF NAILS?WHAT WOULD YOU
RECOMMEND FOR A FINISH? ANY OTHER TIPS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
THANY YOU, DAVID.

David,
My aproach;
(1) Prime both sides of clapboard.
(2) 15# felt over marine ply
(3) create "rain screen" using 1/2" furring strips.(FHB had an article a little ways back)
(4)single nail using stainless steel
(5)prime all ends after cuts and caulk every joint
(6)finish with a quality exterior paint
Thats how I`d attack it, best of luck to you!

MR. REYNOLDS,
THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION. IT WILL BE VERY HELPFULL.COULD YOU TELL
ME HOW MUCH I SHOULD OVERLAP THE SIDING? ALSO WILL A GOOD SEMI-
TRANSPARENT STAIN BE O.K.? THANK YOU, DAVID.
The most important part of JD's advice is the backpriming and sealing. That is always a good idea, especially with pine siding, but you are taking it from a stable, dry environment out to a damp beach location. This wood is going to try to move a lot when you install it. If it is shiplap style be sure to allow for that movement. The prepainting will inhibit the absorption of moisture. If you can manage to paint it right where it is first, that would be best.
