My girlfriend has recently moved into a rental in an older house that has plaster walls. Overall the walls are in pretty good shape with the exception some cracks, which unfortunately are in obvious places – I would like to repair them prior to painting the room. I’ve done plenty of drywall work but don’t know if I should be mudding and or taping over plaster. Any suggestions or recommendations from those of you who have worked with plaster would be greatly appreciated.

try searching the archives for "plaster repair". there have been many discussions about your problem. basically my experience has been open up the cracks, brush on a bonding agent like PlasterWeld, fill cracks, and top coat with joint compound. Takes a little work, but results worth it.
Hope this helps. Rich.
*I've repaired cracks and patched in board to plaster and have achieved good results with drywall finishing techniques. I use paper tape. Remove all the crumbling parts, and remove plaster that has lost its bond to the lath. On occasion or maybe to start, have used Plaster Weld as a primer. Use the dry, low shrink for big build ups and ready mix Multi-purpose for skimming. Some luck with lite wt. but I feel it's too soft and might not bond as well. Best of luck.If you're going to drywall for her, you might as well marry her. Best of luck on that too.
*Thank you all for you great advice and help. Calvin as for your last "technical advice" well you know that construction projects can get very complicated ... There are cost proposals, timelines - and deliverables due! Then when it all starts coming nicely together and looking really beautiful, the profits start flowing right on thru to corporate headquarters ..
*And Martin, as with most construction projects...&*#k it up now and you'll be *%#@*d forever. Do it right the first time. Best of luck with it.
