Hi Everyone, I’m new. Question – I have wood shingles on the south facing exterior of my home in the bay area California. They are intact and reasonable sound, but fading and I am sure they need some protection from the sun and rain. Also I would like to bring them back to a dark brown if possible. Does any one have a recommendation for a product that is effective and not too difficult to apply? I am pretty handy but just an amateur not a contractor. Do I need an oil based stain? Would that offer protection? Should I power wash first? How to apply, spray, brush both? I would like to get the best protection even if costs a little more. Can I use the same thing on my deck? I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks josephw

do not power wash that will damage the wood and inject so much water that it will be dirty aain before it dries out in 3-4 weeks.
use a brush with a mix of TSP and water or Flood has deck and siding brighteners if the problem is mildew.
if otherwise clean, just brush dirt and dust off with a broom.
Mask off anything you don't want to get the staain onto.
Cabot's stains are a good choice to pick from.
I would use a brush 3"
Others might put the stain in a pump up garden sprayer first and then brush it in after spraying each area.
your coverage will probably be 250ft/gal on dry irregular wood like this
