Anyone have any tips[for lazy guys] for finding joists without rolling back the carpet? This is my place and not a customer’s. Stud Finders work?

If a floor register exists, temporarily remove it and see where the joist is.
most joists are on 16" oc.
then with a claw hammer and a 2" finishing nail and a piece of chalk start locating them.
it will not hurt the carpet
