Has anyone installed roof windows (skylites)in a situation where the window would be in constant sun throughout the day?
I’ve tried getting info from andersen directly and from my local yard but it seems I’m getting different answers from both.
These windows are located in an attic apartment and the customer needs relief from the heat buildup and a little breeze. I’d like to get the windows that would add ventilation, open the space somewhat and avoid heat gain through the glass. Any info would be most appreciated.
(On a side note, any way to narrow the FHB header? It takes up a good deal of realestate in my browser window. It seems I have no option using my curser to squeeze it down a bit.)Thanks.

Go with Velux with the shade option, IMHO they have a better track record and it seems like a better fit and finish to me.
As far as the blue monster, mouse over to the extreme left of your screen and sneak up to the border, then you will see your arrow turn into a 2 double arrow. At this point you can click and drag the blue monster up.

Mike, thanks for the reply.A guy at the yard told me about a shade option but said there may be problems with them in a windy situation when the skylite is open.He was talking about shades that are not in the glazing.
Have you heard of or experienced a problem like that.
Are you suggesting that particular option or the ones with the shades between the glazings? Thanks again. George Creamer
Not sure about the problem with the blinds in the wind. I suppose you could leave the blinds open when the skylight is open. I would not reccommend the blind between the glass. This option prevents you from having insulated glass.

Thank you all for your advice. We ordered the velux w/the venetian blinds. There was another one ordered from insula-dome for the bathroom. It was the only one I could locate that had a 14" x 46" venting lite. This one did not have blinds as an option but had a fabric shade which I ordered. thanks again! George

Ha! It worked! My cursor didn't turn to a double arrow, but I touched the point to the bottome of the dark blue and tried anyway. Now it's only about 3/16". Thanks for the tip! :D--------------------------------------------------------

last few years at the home show (ottawa, ont.) there has been a skylight on display that opens up, like the gull wing doors on some sports cars. The unit has hydraulic lifts and as it opens it also unacordians a railing system .. It has to be one of the major manufacturers, but sorry, can't remember who makes it .. worth doing some research to find out ..
I have VELUX installed in my bathroom. On the advice of those here and the yard where I bought my replacement windows I put in a non-operating self flashed unit last year when we re-did the roof. Love it~Another vote for Velux. Of course anything is better than the polycarbonate bubble that it replaced! The unit I installed is lightly tinted. The light also comes down a skylight shaft. The window is mounted on a roof that faces SSE. Pretty much constant sun all day until 5 or 6 PM in the summer. Heat buildup has not been a huge problem for us. But the unit still lets in plenty of light. The window is small- 24 x 24 so a larger window would have more heat gain. But ours has been no problem in a very small bath. You might consider something like this and then add shades later if the heat gain is too much. I believe the units with the shades between the panes are pretty spendy.
That is Velux as well.

I believe Anderson ownes Velux, but I too would go with them.
i have 7 velux units with blinds and screens on a 1875 tin roof
not a leak to date and they have been installed for a few years
having used other kinds before i know all about leaks
