Need “name” of gadget to rotate columns
Hope y’all can help. I seek a pair of items. Wish to attach them to bottom of 2 free-standing wood columns which I wish to be able to rotate occasionally. The current bottom wood block (plinth block?) at each columns’ base is 13″x13″ square. So I’m looking for something like a ball-bearing (?) lazy susan type gadget to attach to each column bottom so I can rotate them whenever I wish. WHAT do I call such an item so I can effectively search for where to buy them? also – each needs to be able to support approx 70 lbs of weight…

You got the name right -- ball bearing lazy susan. If you're working indoors, you can use lazy susan bearings intended to rotate big TVs. For instance, Lee Valley (http://www.leevalley.com) sells a 12" diameter one for $6 with a load capacity of 1000 lbs.
Thanks Jamie! will ck out lee valley website now.
mind if I ask why?
I've never had a request for rotating columns.
Just curious ...
btw .. a hefty set of ballbearing lazy susans should do the trick .. you've been given good info so far.

Jeff - no problem! My mahogany-finished fluted ~60" high, columns are 2 mail-order items which have openings/shelves for holding CDs but the opening is only about 90 deg out of the 360 degrees of the columns' cross-section...sooooo - I wanted to be able to rotate the columns whenever I want so as to not show the CD storage/shelves unless I need or wish to access them. (BTW, Jamie was right about lee valley website and I just placed order there!).
cool.
don't forget about something at the top to keep them from tipping.

just reread and say the "about 5 ft" deal ...
I was thinking floor to ceiling ..
in that case ...
make for a strong and/or heavy base.
we have a round cd rack ... racks on 4 sides ... rotates ... it's sofa height .. does double duty as an end table.

Hi Jeff - got the "solid weighty base" issue covered - thanks heaps tho! Sun shining here so headed outside now. ciao!
Glad you cleared up the reason for this.
One of my entertainments here is connecting my imagination and the screen names of folks.
So I look at yours, Miss Shredder, and I remember Olliver North's Fine and loyal secretary during the final moments of her career. You can imagine what things the FBI would find in your columns, LOL
Now there's an idea - I'll see if there's another location for my shotgun here at home, ;)

Piffin - your imaginative translation of my screen name was/is too literal (in my case anyway)... a 'shredder' is also a handle for someone who snowboards ...
Ah! You youngsters keep changing the language!
Nice design touch you've got though.

I assume this is your first encounter with Lee Valley. Super nice people to deal with. If you get the product and decide it's not right, they have a very liberal return/exchange policy. And almost all the stuff they sell is good quality. They try to identify things made in the US and Canada, so you can avoid buying that canuck crap.
Just kidding fellas :)
