Hi
I am new to BT. I have been reading thru past posts the last few weeks. There
sure is alot of good advice and knowledge here. I have been out of construction
for several years, had a job in the transportation industry. Was not even aware
that there was new type of pressure treated. Well I’ll get to my question, I will
be building a new deck for my neice in RI next week, and need any info that
you can share on the proper fasteners, nails, screws, hangers to use. I will be
hand nailing everything. I did a search on google and found a few good sites,
but they are all a couple years old. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated
Thanx
Steve
P.S. Why is all my typing double spaced

They say stainless steel fasteners for everything in contact with this stuff.
I have used Hot Dipped Galvanized and not seen any signs of damage.
Instead of nailing use screws, it will hold up better with the climate changes.
Thanks for the reply thats about what I thought, what type of scews do you use?
Steve
I use 1/2 by 8" Hot dipped carraige bolts for attaching rim joist to 4x6 posts.
Depending in what kind of decking I am using, 3" #10 square drive 316 stainless screws for 5/4 PT decking. For synthetic decking like Trex I use 2-1/2" trim head star drive screws Stainless also.
This is pretty straightforward job but you need to take precautions for even the smallest jobs. You need galvanized hangers and galvanized nails. I would buy the simpsons nails. I would use stainless steel screws. I probabably would not wrap the ends of the joists with Vycor. It traps moisture and may do more harm than good. But covering the tops of the joists with strips of Vycor is a great idea and you can even predrill the holes with a countersink bit that goes into the joist.Snaps lines at a few places so that the decking is straight. And arange the decking so that seams form some sort of a pattern that looks good. You place the joist level, and glue strips of wood so that you have a eiight or so slope every foot. Over a short span you can get away with sloping the joists. And don't overlook any flashing details. If you nail the decking then glue it down.
If you want to use the corrosive ACQ treated lumber, you can get stainless stuff from:
http://www.swansecure.com
If code doesn't require ACQ, you could use untreated wood, and treat it yourself with Jasco Termin-8. It's non-corrosive, and lasts as well as treated lumber if you're thorough.
