I am trying to figure out how the alum-a-pole top braces are supposed to work. <!—-> <!—-><!—->

On the front of the house I attached the brackets on the folding support braces into the rafters about 2 feet back from the gutter and the brace followed the slope of the roof down and the pole was about the right distance from the house. The top brackets are installed as in this picture (1). http://www.wernerladder.com/catalog/files/rc128.pdf

On the gable end of the house I have a rafter about a foot from the edge and the next one is more than three feet back from the edge of the roof, too far. Can I attach the folding brackets to the rafter 1 foot back and have them slope up (and tighten in this position against the pole) to get the pole the right distance from the house.<!—-><!—->

I am very new at this and am not sure what kinds of loads are applied to the top brace. I am also going up about 32 feet and will have a brace in the middle.

I think you are better off to run the braces to the wall in many cases. The straight arm goes against the building, straight. This puts you at a good working position for siding. With a brace half way up, you will want to keep them the same. As you go up, more pressure is on the braces. You just skip a small section of siding around the braces and finish it off from a ladder. Same if you are painting.
Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
you are doing fine, just attach to the rafter 1' in.
For what it is worth, I have never installed a middle bracket on 32', 48' yes
