I have recently started remodeling an old post and beam barn that was converted into house in the thirties. The second floor was left untouched, and now we are looking at insulting and dry walling etc. The rafters run from a knee wall to the ridge with 6×6 beams acting as collar ties. We would like to strap then insulate and dry wall the rafters, essentially leaving the ceiling vaulted with only the beams exposed. My question is do we need to run continuous venting from the soffits ridge? What are the pros and cons? Do we have any alternatives? Is there a potential for moisture damage or damage from snow? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
