I’m making the plunge into this newsgroup for the first time after many years of subscriptions and a on and off lurking here, usually either finding out new stuff or verifying my own methods of building.
I have a request for some imput. What would you recommend to use as material for an exterior fence and a wall to match that has a 3/8 inch wide groove every 4 inches and will be stained. (It has to match an existing detail). The owner/architect wants to use con-heart redwood and have it milled out of 1×6 so that the tongue and groove will have to have special knifes made. A large penny to spend on a fence. I was thinking that maybe a water-proof plywood could be used and I could router along its lengths every four inches, but I am worried about blow-out, and I think that then he would have to paint it, (which he could because the rest of the house is stucco and wood and painted), but he likes the idea of stained wood. Wonder if anyone has a suggestion that might decide this for me. Thanks.

4'' wood, 3/8's gap. No T&G. The spacing would pick up the pattern you want. On the wall, shape a shiplap on wider stock, same 3/8's reveal.
T-111 with 4'' repeat?

Thanks for the reply, it prompted me to rethink the way to do it. I think the shiplap is a better solution too.
