I’m building a steel frame for a small gate, about 4 ft. opening, 5 ft. tall. The frame is rectangular with a diagonal cross member, all made of 1.5 x 1.5 in steel, 0.060 wall thickness.
My first thought was to put tounge and groove wood (redwood or cedar or other) on the outside of the gate and then paint it. Is there any synthetic materials that I could use instead of wood ? I looked at Trex planks, but they would add alot of weight to the gate. The material does not have to be tounge and groove. Does anyone make a hollow (or solid but light-weight) synthetic material that could be screwed on to the steel frame, even better, one that will hold paint ?
thanks !

The newer PVC trim boards aren't very heavy. Azeks is one brand. It comes in a gloss white, but I think it's paintable.

Woops, I found it on the web, Azek.
I'm thinking Azec which is a paintable extruded PVC ( Puffed plastic) that you can buy in sheets or strips and mill to a pattern or panelize iot or detail in any other way with any woodworking tools.

Use plywood intended for exterior sheathing -- T111-type stuff. Or use MDO. It is exterior-grade plywood faced with phenolic/paper sheet. It is most often used by companies which make exterior signs. If you want to get fancy, put a solid-lumber 1x2 on the top of the plywood to keep water from attacking the edge.
